October 19 - November 16, 2023: WNMU Expressive Arts Faculty Exhibition
Two groups of Matt's work will be on display in the Francis McCray Gallery of Contemporary Art at Western New Mexico University as part of the Expressive Arts Faculty Exhibition - from his Domestic Disturbance Series and some new paintings. A reception for the exhibition will be held at 6 pm on Thursday, October 19, 2023. The McCray Gallery is located at 1000 W. College Ave., Silver City, NM, on Western New Mexico University's campus.
2022
December 2, 2022 - January 1, 2023: Regalos
Matt's painting, To Be Far Closer I, is part of Hecho Gallery's Regalos exhibition for the month of December. Hecho Gallery is located at 1129 W. Palace Avenue in Santa Fe. Regalos is Matt's first art show as a New Mexico resident.. A reception for the exhibition will be held from 5 - 7 pm on Friday, December 2, 2022.
After over a decade in Sioux Center, Iowa, at Dordt University, Matt has accepted a new position at Western New Mexico University in the Expressive Arts Department. He and his family are thrilled to be making their way west, ready to explore the numerous art galleries of Silver City and the hiking trails of the Gila wilderness.
2021

Matt's work will be featured in a solo show at Northwestern College's Te Paske Gallery. The works are from Matt's Domestic Disturbance and The Flock series and will be seen for the first time in their entirety. An artist reception will be held on Wednesday, October 27 at 7 pm in the Gallery in Orange City, Iowa.
August 24 - September 24, 2021: While We Were Out, Again
Dordt University is once again hosting the art show While We Were Out featuring art made by the Dordt community. Matt's digital illustration Clogged is part the exhibition, which can be seen at the Dordt University Campus Center art gallery. A reception for the exhibition will be held from 7 - 8 pm on Thursday, September 9th, 2021 in the Ekhardt Lounge, next to the gallery.
2020
October 5 - December 11, 2020: The Fl3tch3r Exhibit
For the second time, Matt's artworks are part of the Fl3tch3r exhibit, hosted by East Tennessee State University's Reece Museum with his drawings Illegal Contact and 410 and 440 East First Street included. This exhibit is curated by artist Carlton Wilkinson. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year the juror's talk by Wilkinson will be virtual, recording November 5 and posted at www.etsu.edu/reece.

Dordt University is hosting the art show While We Were Out featuring art made during the Covid-19 pandemic. Matt's digital illustration Loop the Loop is part the exhibition, which can be seen at the Dordt University Campus Center art gallery.

Matt's paintings Glasses and Glass (Lithium) and Plaster in the Tomb (Calcium) have been selected to be a part of the Orange City Arts Regional Art Exhibition 2020. Though the physical show was cancelled due to Covid-19, the digital show is now available online here.
February 7 - April 4, 2020: Octagonal 2020: The Annual All Media Exhibit
Matt's drawings Illegal Contact and 736 East First Street are on display at the Octagon Art Center in Ames, IA, as part of the Octagonal 2020 Exhibit, with 736 East First Street receiving the Paper Media Award. This exhibit is curated by artist Jordan Weber. The opening reception is on February 7, 2020, 5 - 7 pm with awards presented at 6 pm.
2019
December 2, 2019 - February 17, 2020: Of System of Elements
Last fall, the Dordt University chemistry department commissioned Matt to create a painting for each element of the periodic table. 40 of these paintings will be on display in the Dordt University Campus Center Gallery in Matt's solo show, Of system of elements. The title is taken from the Dimitri Mendeleev's publication of the the first periodic table, 150 years ago this past March. The opening reception is on Wednesday, December 4th, from 7 - 8 pm with an artist talk at 7:15 pm.
August 31, 2019: Artsplash 2019
Along with artists Sarah Lemmon and Mary Mello-Nee, Matt was a juror for Artsplash 2019. Artsplash is the Sioux City Art Center's annual arts festival located in Riverside Park in Sioux City. Award winning artists were printmaker Meghan O'Connor, painter Michael Madzo, and woodworker Ken Nelson.
July 1, 2019: The Worshipful Company of Silverfists
The website for the Worshipful Company of Silverfists is now live. The Worshipful Company of Silverfists, with a name giving homage to traditional trade guilds of London, is an illustration group based in Iowa that Matt helped found in 2018. The Silverfists are dedicated the belief in the transformative power of story based imagery.
The Splatters Came First
On May 9, 2019, Sioux City Art Center curator Todd Behrens presented a radio description of Matt's Domestic Disturbance Series works on KWIT, Western Iowa's Public radio station. The story titled The Splatters Came First refers to Matt's process of crushing walnuts via minivan onto paper, as seen on this websites homepage.
March 22 - June 23, 2019: Sioux City Art Center Selects
Matt was recently selected to be a part of the Sioux City Art Center Selects exhibition. As a result, five drawings from Matt's Domestic Disturbance Series are on display at the Sioux City Art Center. Selects is a regional juried exhibition, open to all artists in Iowa, as well as artists living within 300 miles of Sioux City. Artists submitted a body of work, which was judged by the overall quality of the artworks and by the clarity and consistency of the pieces. The opening reception is on Friday, March 22, 2019, from 5 - 7 pm. The exhibition also includes The Artist Experience on Saturday, March 23 form 10:30 am to 3:30 pm, which includes artist talks and a roundtable discussion by all eight artists.
February 15, 2019: College Art Association Annual Conference
Matt will be presenting at the College Art Association (CAA) Conference in New York City on Friday, February 15th, 2019. His talk titled Gained in Translation: Bringing Art Theory into the Art Studio, is part of the Teaching Art Theory and Criticism in Undergraduate Studio Art Program session, chaired by Professor Ann Bangsil Kim from Indiana University East.
January 17 - April 15, 2019: 62nd Arrowhead Regional Exhibition
Matt's drawing, 110 Fourth Avenue Northeast, part of his Domestic Disturbance series, is on display at Duluth Art Institute in Duluth, Minnesota. The work is part of of the upcoming 62nd Arrowhead Regional exhibition.
December 15 - March 10, 2019: Artcetera '19
Matt's painting, Chocolate Ice Cream with Caramel Sauce, part of his Shelf Life series, is on display at the Sioux City Art Center as part of their Artcetera '19 exhibition. On Saturday, March 2, 2019, all works in the show will be auctioned off with the net proceeds benefiting the Art Center.

Matt's drawings, 410 and 440 East First Street and 445 and 449 East First Street, part of his Domestic Disturbance series, are on display at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln's Eisentrager - Howard Gallery as part of MACAA (Mid America College Art Association) Members juried exhibition . The first Friday reception in the gallery is on October 5, 2018 from 5 - 8 pm.
Additionally, Matt will be presenting at the MACAA conference on Thursday, October 4. The talk titled The Old is New Again: Indirect Painting as Reinvention, will consider the indirect approach to painting, and how beneficial it can be for 21st century art students.

Philadelphia's Practice Gallery is holding a Salon des Refusés titled Best of the Worst for any artist rejected from a Philadelphia area art gallery's summer show. Matt's Illegal Contact and Safety from his new series Morituri te Salutant are included in this exhibition as they were rejected from Vox Populi's VOX IV.

Matt was recently named one of the Iowa Arts Council Fellowship Award Winners for the 2015-16 year.

Matt's drawing, 410 and 440 East First Street, part of his series, Domestic Disturbance is on display at the Indianapolis Art Center as part of the Art from the Heartland group show. The exhibition was juries by Indy Moca's Gallery Director Mike Barclay.

Matt and Emily Stokes juried this year 7th Annual Orange Arts Regional Exhibition at the DeWitt Theater Arts Center at Northwestern College in Orange City, IA. Additionally, Matt and Emily were asked to participate in a juror's showcase featuring their own work. Matt's Illegal Contact and Safety from his new series Morituri te Salutant are included.

Iowa Arts Council Artist Fellowship
Matt was recently named one of the Iowa Arts Council Fellowship Award Winners for the 2015-16 year.
The Iowa Arts Council is committed to recognizing the impact that individual artists have on the vitality of the arts in Iowa. The Artist Fellowship provides support to individuals who demonstrate exceptional creativity in the arts and the capacity for continued contributions to the excellence and innovation of the arts in the State. The Artist Fellowship Program seeks to elevate the arts in Iowa by advancing the artistic careers of Iowa artists through funding and professional development.
